As professionals we strive to perform, spending time reflecting on what we do well and what we can do to be even better. We attend personal development courses to learn new skills and perhaps gain greater understanding of the skills we already have.
I believe that by using the skills we learn and use in our professional lives, we can perform better in a social environment. We all see how new skills learned in a professional environment can enhance our personal lives, but how often do we put them into practice?
Using models such as ‘kolbs learning cycle’ we can break down how we look at our experiences, what worked for us and what we need to do differently.
Concrete
experience
Your last date
Reflective
Observation
Spend some time
reflecting on your date. Was your date as you expected them to be?
What did you find out about your date?
How did they make you feel?
Abstract
Conceptualisation
What worked that you
will carry over to the next date? What do you need to ‘stop doing’?
What do you need to ‘start doing’?
Active
Experimentation
How are you going to
use what you have learnt? How do you ensure that you leave the ‘stop doing’ out?
How do you ensure that you include the ‘start doing’ in your next date?
How does the old
saying go?
‘If you always do
what you have always done, you will always get what you have always got’
